Sapelo Island National Estaurine

Research Reserve

Sapelo Island is accessable by ferry departing Monday through Friday at 8:30 am, returning at 12:30 pm and departing again at 5:30. Saturdays departures are at 9 am and 1 pm.The Sapelo dock is located on Highway 99, nine miles south and eight miles north of Highway 17.An $8.00 guided tour is available on Wednesdays from 9 am to 12 pm and Saturdays from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. Fort King George Historical Site
Georgia's oldest fort, nice self guided tour, $2 admission. Cannon firing the second and fourth Saturdays of each month. 1.5 miles east of U.S. 17 and 3 miles from I-95 Exit 10. more information

Butler Island PlantationChimmney at Butler's Island Plantation

Located on US 17 one mile south of Darien, this former rice plantation is now a residence for the Dept. of Natural Resources. There is a big chimmney (see picture) in front of the house that piques the interest of motorists passing. The house is not the original plantation house but built in 1926 by Col. T.L. Huston, former half-owner of the NY Yankees. Good bird watching site. Check out Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation, five miles south on US 17.

The Smallest Church in America

In 1949,despite limited funds, Mrs. Agnes Harper, a rural grocer, constructed the chapel so travelers passing through coastal Georgia would have a sanctuary for meditation and worship.

Harris Neck Wildlife Refuge
From I-95, take exit 12, go south on US 17 1 mile, turn left on HWY 131, then 6.2 miles. Beautiful sights of savannahs, creeks and wildlife. Nice developments in Belvedere Island, Eagle Neck and Goulds Landing.

Bike and Walking Tour of Old Town Darien

A newly completed bike path allows for a leisurely tour of historic Darien. Bikes will be available for rent a Fort King George. A map is availabe here.
