McIntosh County Georgia

Coatal GeorgiaMcIntosh County, Georgia is located on the the coast about 45 miles south of Savannah. Darien, a town of 1,800 people is the county seat. The county has approximately 10,000 residents, and is bordered by the South Newport River to the north and the Altamaha River to the south. England established Fort King George in 1721, designed to defend the southern flank of the English colony against French expansion into the Altamaha region and the Spanish in Florida. The fort was abandoned in 1727, but England still valued Georgia, and Gen. James Edward Oglethorpe settled Savannah in 1733. Darien was founded by Scottish Highlanders in 1736, making Darien Georgia's second oldest city. During the Civil War, Darien was burned to the ground on June 11, 1863 by Union troops.

Presently, Mclntosh County has been tagged the last frontier on the Eastern Seaboard ... almost unlimited affordable land; the wide open range completely devoid of heavy industry; plenty of unsettled living space for pioneer newcomers.

That frontier mentality, however, is fading fast. Every day, more and more people are moving in and leading to a drive for development. Expansive parcels of land that have forever been zoned Agriculture-Forestry are more and more frequently being rezoned single-family and multi-family residential.
